SPAWP Projects

Spring Creek Fire Erosion & Ips Beetle Mitigation Project

This project focuses on erosion control and insect infestation response in the Cucharas and Huerfano River watersheds, areas heavily impacted by the 2018 Spring Creek Fire. With a $55,000 cooperative agreement from the Bureau of Land Management, SPAWP is working with local landowners to stabilize soils and remove stressed trees affected by Ips beetle outbreaks.

Project activities include:

  • Erosion control to manage post-fire runoff from public lands
  • Fuels treatment and forest restoration on private properties
  • Upcoming work to remove dead and infested trees on Majors Ranch

About the BLM Forests and Woodlands Grant

Funded projects improve fire recovery, manage insect and disease outbreaks, and enhance long-term watershed health through restoration activities like fuels reduction, thinning, reforestation, and erosion control.

The program also emphasizes:

  • Science-based forest restoration
  • Fire-resilient infrastructure and access
  • Biomass utilization and habitat conservation
  • Collaboration with nonprofits, local governments, and tribal partners
